Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has explained Sipho Chaine’s surprise exclusion from the squad ahead of their two clashes against Panama.

Broos named his squad for their international friendly and Renaldo Leaner has come in to replace Chaine.

The Bafana mentor has also included Mamelodi Sundowns’ Ronwen Williams and Ricardo Goss of Siwelele FC in his squad alongside Leaner.

Broos emphasised that places in the national team are not guaranteed, insisting that players must consistently prove themselves both on and off the pitch to earn selection.

“I think Leaner is always on the preliminary list,” Broos said.

“I think it was a good occasion now. He was already with us a few months ago, but I want to see him again. We will see what that gives. Imagine something happens with the goalkeepers, so we need something, and I think maybe Leaner can be.

“Everybody has to be worried when they don’t perform. I don’t say Sipho is not performing, but everybody has to be worried. It’s not a charity. It’s something that is very serious. I want to see Leaner with us because it’s not only on the pitch, but outside the pitch, and we will see.”
