Former Kaizer Chiefs and Polokwane City midfielder Cole Alexander has announced his retirement from professional football.

The 36-year-old has been without a club after parting ways with Polokwane City at the end of last season.

However, Alexander did not go in search of a new club and instead called time on his career, which spanned close to two decades.

Alexander has scored 16 goals and registered 14 assists in 313 appearances across all competitions through his career.

He has played for Hellenic FC, Ajax Cape Town, Vasco Da Gama, Chippa United Polokwane City, Bidvest Wits, Odisha FC, Kaizer Chiefs and Helsingborgs IF over the course of his career.

“After nearly two decades in professional football, today I officially announce my retirement,” Alexander said in a video he posted on Instagram.

“Although I didn’t want my career to end the way my last season went, I’ve learned that not everything is in our control. That final chapter and the environment I was in, doesn’t define the journey I’ve been blessed to live.

“This is for the fans, supporters, and loved ones who’ve been with me through it all, even when you might have already sensed this day was coming. Thank you for nearly 20 years of belief and love.

“The video is raw and uncut, forgive the emotions, they were all real and from the heart. There’s so much more gratitude in me for so many more people and organizations I didn’t name.

“To the development structures, clubs, coaches, teachers, uncles and aunties, my church, my community, my family, and everyone who poured into me: I salute you. Your support was my strength. I humbly ask you to keep standing with me as I step into what’s next.

“No man is an island, I still need you. Football gave me more than I ever deserved: lessons, brotherhood, purpose, and memories I’ll carry forever. This chapter didn’t end the way I wanted, but God’s not done writing my story.”
