Bafana Bafana’s journey in the Africa Cup of Nations came to an end after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Cameroon in the Round of 16 played at the Stade El Barid in Rabat.
South Africa got off to a bright start and should have taken the lead seven minutes in but Relebohile Mofokeng fired his effort over the crossbar.
Bafana had the ball in the back of the net when Lyle Foster slotted the ball home but his strike was disallowed for offside.
The Indomitable Lions were forced into making a change in the 21st minute when Darlin Yongwa was taken off through injury and subsequently replaced by Mahamadou Nagida.
Cameroon took the lead in the 33rd minute when Junior Tchamadeu capitalised on a loose ball to fire the ball past Ronwen Williams as the game went into the half time break 1-0 in favour of Cameroon.
The Indomitable Lions doubled their lead early in the second half when Christian Kofane latched on to a cross into the box to head the ball home.
Bafana had a chance to reduce the deficit in the 62nd minute but Samukele Kabini saw his close-range effort saved by Devis Epassy.
Hugo Broos opted to make changes a minute later as Kabini and Appollis were taken off and replaced by Aubrey Modiba and Evidence Makgopa.
Cameroon had an opportunity to add a third goal in the 70th minute when Mbuemo darted towards the Bafana goal on the counter-attack but Williams did well to block Avom’s effort at goal.
South Africa managed to pull a goal back in the 87th minute when substitute Makgopa found the back of the net to make it 2-1.
Bafana pushed forward in the closing stages of the game but they were unable to bypass the Cameroon defence as the Indomitable Lions held on for the win and secured their passage to the quarter-finals.
