Bafana Bafana suffered a 1-0 defeat to 10-men Egypt in their Africa Cup of Nations Group B clash after late VAR drama at the Grand Stade D’Agadir in Agadir.

Egypt got off to a good start and found the moment early in the game but they found it hard to bypass the Bafana defence in the opening exchanges of the match.

The Egyptians were awarded a penalty just before the half-time break when Khuliso Mudau was adjudged to have fouled Mohamed Salah in the box.

VAR intervened and handed Egypt a penalty, overturning the referee’s original decision of no penalty. Salah stepped up and made no mistake from the spot-kick.

Egypt were reduced to 10-men on the stroke of half-time after Mohamed Hany received a red card for a foul on Teboho Mokoena.

The game went into the half-time break 1-0 in favour of the Egyptians as South Africa looked to bounce back in the second-half.

South Africa came out on the better side in the second-half and produced numerous opportunities to level matters in the match.

Bafana thought they should have been awarded a penalty in the 90th minute when Mokoena’s shot hit the arm of Yasser Ibrahim.

The reply showed that the ball struck his arm inside the box but the referee waved away the penalty, while VAR opted against awarding a penalty.

South Africa pushed forward in the closing stages of the match as they went in search of an equaliser, but Bafana were unable to find the back of the net as Egypt held on for the win.
