Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Lucky Mohomi aims to work harder fighting for his place in the team after being talked out of a possible loan by Pitso Mosimane.

The 28-year-old was a target of SuperSport United during the recent transfer window after he struggled to break into the Downs team due to injuries and competition for places.

Mohomi, who played just one game in the 2018-19 season, revealed during the launch of the Shell Helix Cup that he wanted to go out on loan but Mosimane told him that he just needed to work harder to get his place back in the team.

‘A lot has been happening, and the coach told me that he believes in me,’ said the former Free State Stars man.

‘I need to work harder to fight for my place and hopefully by the time the game [against Kaizer Chiefs in the mid-season friendly] comes I will be fully fit, because currently I am recovering from a knock. Hopefully he [Mosimane] will see then that I am ready.’

When asked if he tried to force through a move, the midfilder admitted that he had to take a hard look at himself.

‘You know, those thoughts are there because I can’t afford to always be sitting on the sidelines. But you have to look at yourself and ask, “Am I doing enough?” It’s high time I step up. I requested a loan because with all my injuries it is tough to break into the team, especially when you’ve been out for long,’ Mohomi revealed.

‘But the coach told me I need to work more, hence the loan did not materialise. I think right now I am OK, and my mind is OK.’
