Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp says if the club want to bring in Stuart Baxter to replace him, they ‘must do it’.

Chiefs may have begun their Absa Premiership campaign with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Highlands Park, but that has not stopped talk of a potential reunion with Baxter.

The English coach stepped down from his role as Bafana Bafana coach on Friday after guiding the side to a quarter-final berth at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

When Chiefs sacked Giovanni Solinas back in December 2018 rumours were rife that Amakhosi were looking to bring in the two-time Absa Premiership-winning coach.

He was, however, still under contract with the national side and thus Middendorp was appointed as Solinas’ successor.

However, things did not go swimmingly in the remainder of the 2018-19 season for the German coach, who saw his team finish outside the top eight for the first time in 12 years after an embarrassing Nedbank Cup final defeat by NFD side TS Galaxy.

With Chiefs having not picked up any silverware after Baxter left the club in 2015, rumours that he would return began circulating almost immediately after his resignation.

Middendorp was asked about the talks after his side’s victory over Highlands, and he responded emphatically before ending his post-match media conference:

‘If the club has an idea to bring Stuart Baxter they should do it, thank you,’ responded the Chiefs boss.
