For the second game in a row Kaizer Chiefs defender Eric Mathoho was the match winner as his first half strike handed Amakhosi a tight 1-0 win over Black Leopards on Saturday evening.

Chiefs came into the game at the Moses Mabhida Stadium looking for the second victory in as many games after an exciting 3-2 win over Highlands Park in their first game of the season last weekend.

Leopards on the other hand were in search of their first points of the season after they lost 1-0 to Polokwane City in their opener.

Chiefs were forced into a change before the game even started as goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma hurt himself in the warm-up and was replaced at the last-minute by Nigeria international shot-stopper Daniel Akpeyi.

This didn’t break the Soweto giants concentration as they started the game on the front foot and were almost ahead after just 10 minutes as Lazarous Kambole got on the end of a wayward defensive header but he could not hit the target with his shot.

Just two minutes later though Chiefs got their lead as George Maluleka whipped in an excellent corner, picking out Mathoho in the box, who rose highest and sent his header into the back of the net.

The Glamour boys were threatening fromm set plays and almost double their lead 10 minutes later but this time Leonardo Castro headed of the left-hand upright.

Leopards looked to get back into the game and had their best chance when midfielder Tshwarelo Bereng was played through down the left-hand side with Akpeyi coming off his line and Bereng missed the target from a tight angle.

1-0 to Chiefs at the break.

Amakhosi coach Ernst Middendorp looked to mix things up in the second half as he hauled off Castro and brought on Dumisani Zuma during the interval.

It didn’t quite have the impact he was hoping for as Lidoda Duvha started the second half on the front foot, as they looked to dominate possession of the ball.

Chiefs though still looked the more likely to score as Bernard Parker swung the ball in to the box and Nurkovic chested it down in to the path of Mathoho, whose right-footed volley went narrowly wide of the right-hand upright in the 57th minute.

Manyama had the chance to kill the game off in the 75th minute when he was slipped in one-on-one with the keeper but Jonas Mendes came out and made a brilliant save with his legs.

Maluleka then hit the crossbar with an effort from outside the box with as time ticked on and despite Leopards best efforst they could not find a way back into the game.

Chiefs keep their 100% record while Leopards are still in search for their first points.
