Manchester City’s hopes of an unprecedented quadruple were dashed after Will Grigg’s 79th-minute strike saw Wigan Athletic claim a shock 1-0 victory in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Pep Guardiola’s ten-man outfit suffered their third defeat of the campaign in all competitions at the hands of third-tier outfit Wigan.

City came close to breaking the deadlock in the opening exchanges through efforts from Sergio Aguero and Ilkay Gundogan.

Wigan suffered an early injury blow when former Manchester United midfielder Nick Powell was forced off with an injury.

The complexity of the encounter changed on the stroke of half-time when Fabian Delph was shown a straight red card for a studs up challenge.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, City continued to dominate the clash, but struggled to create any real opportunities.

Wigan took the lead much against the run of play when Grigg capitalised on Kyle Walker’s mistake before sending a fine curling effort past Claudio Bravo.

Guardiola’s side threw everything forward in the late stages, but Wigan held firm for a famous victory to advance to the next round of the FA Cup.
