The 2026 World Cup will feature 48 teams, up from 32, after Fifa gave the plans to expand the showpiece competition the greenlight on Tuesday.

President Gianni Infantino’s time in charge of the football organisation has kicked into second gear with the confirmation of the expansion of the World Cup.

‘The FIFA Council unanimously decided on a 48-team #WorldCup as of 2026: 16 groups of 3 teams. Details to follow after the meeting,’ confirmed Fifa on Tuesday.

The most recent change to the World Cup occurred in 1998 when eight teams were added from the 24 that participated in the 1994 World Cup in the USA.

The expanded World Cup, which will feature more African sides, is expected to boost Infantino’s support from Caf as he seeks a second term in 2019.
