Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney expressed his excitement by the prospect of working with new manager Jose Mourinho.

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid coach was announced as United’s new manager on Friday after signing a three-year contract with an option to stay at the club until at least 2020.

The 53-year-old arrives at Old Trafford with an enormous pedigree, having won 22 major team honours in four different countries, and Rooney is eagerly anticipating what lies ahead for the Reds, reports the Manchester United website.

‘He’s one of the best managers in the world. It’s an exciting time for Manchester United,’ Rooney said at a press conference.

‘He knows the Premier League very well and I’m looking forward to it [working with Mourinho].’

Speaking on captaining England at the Euro 2016 the former Everton forward feels proud to captain his nation, stating his delight at being injury free for the tournament.

‘It’s a proud moment to captain the team heading into a tournament,’ added the captain.

‘It’s a young squad but it has got a lot of quality. I’m injury-free, whereas in a lot of tournaments I’ve had little niggles. I’m happy with my fitness and form.’

This season Rooney has managed to help United win the FA Cup title and securing a fifth place finish on the Premier League table, scoring 15 goal and six assist from 41 appearances in all competitions.

England will take on Russia in their first match of the Euro 2016 at the Stade Velodrome on Saturday June 11.

Kick-off has been set for 21:00.
