Justin Rose made two eagles, two birdies, and a bogey in five holes on Thursday and secured the first-round lead at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Rose wrapped up proceedings with birdies at the 16th and 17th of the notorious Torrey Pines North Course and signed for seven under par 65.

Canada’s Adam Hadwin was the closest chaser on six under par, while five players shared third place, among them the in-form Gary Woodland.

Tiger Woods made his return to the PGA Tour with a round of four over par 76, but gave a wry smile after finishing up on the 18th. The 14-time major champion has just begun his comeback, and must settle for small steps.

‘I was fighting out there all day,’ he said. ‘Didn’t really hit it that good. I was in the rough most of the day and it was tough. It was wet.’

Rory Sabbatini was the leading South African and shared 32nd place with a round of two under par 70 on the South Course.

Louis Oosthuizen and Retief Goosen both played their first PGA Tour round of the year and carded 71 apiece to share 47th place.
