Ryan Moore made clutch putts throughout his playoff battle with Rory McIroy for the Tour Championship. It wasn’t enough to secure the American a victory, but he earned the final captain’s pick from Davis Love III for this week’s Ryder Cup.

‘Ryan fits so well with what we have in place,’ Love said. ‘He’s an easy-going, thoughtful guy, but don’t be fooled, Ryan’s a great match-play player with an incredible match-play record. He has guts and determination and everyone saw that [on Sunday]. We’re thrilled to have him with us.’

Moore was a quarter finalist at the WGC-Dell Match Play earlier this year and had a glittering amateur career in the same format.

This Sunday at East Lake Golf Club he shot a final-round 64 to make a sudden-death playoff with Kevin Chappell and Rory McIlroy for the season-ending Tour Championship.

He took the playoff through four holes, tied-longest on the PGA Tour this year, before succumbing when McIlroy made birdie at the 16th.

Moore will join a strong Team USA that included Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, and Jordan Spieth for the match play spectacle, which begins on Friday at Hazeltine Golf Club in Minnesota.
