Having lifted the Cosafa Cup this past weekend the South African Men’s Olympic squad will continue their preparation for the tournament with an international friendly against Japan.

The match will give the predominantly U23 side an opportunity to further iron out any shortcomings in their game before the 2016 Rio Olympics kicks off in August.

Owen Da Gama, who will coach the side in Rio, is thankful for the extra rehearsal time.

‘We are very grateful to the Japan Football Association (JFA) for granting us the chance to play this all-important match,’ he told Safa.net. ‘We are now just over a month away from the Olympic Games, and we need a few more matches to brush up on our game.

‘This is will be an exciting experience for the players and a greater test for all of us in our mission to building a strong South African Olympic team.’

Amaglug-glug have been drawn alongside Group A against hosts Brazil, as well as the likes of Iraq an Denmark. Meanwhile, the squad will be bolstered by the addition of Thapelo Morena, Paseka Mako and Mothiba Mvalo. Lebogang Phiri, meanwhile, will not from part of the travelling party after his club Brondby opted against releasing him.

The match will take place on Wednesday June at the General Sports Stadium Alwin in Nagano.

The action gets underway from 12:30.
