Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho believes his side had complete control of their Europa League match against Saint-Etienne on Wednesday.

The Red Devils claimed a 1-0 victory over the Ligue 1 side and a 4-0 win on aggregate to book their place in the round of 16 in the European competition.

The Portuguese manager says his side showed real professionalism after their dominating performance over the French side, but admits that it wasn’t one of their best performances this season, despite claiming the victory.

‘Everything was under control. Solid, focused, professional. Obviously the first goal kills every hope, but we still like to win. I told the players if somebody gives me a 2-0 victory I would not accept,’ Mourinho told the Manchester United website.

‘We want always to try for the best possible results, so I think it’s always good to win. We didn’t play phenomenal, but we had complete control of the game and our destiny.’

Mourinho went on to says that he has been pleased with his side’s performance over the last four months, having only suffered one defeat in the process.

‘We are not unbeaten, but the record is really good. It’s nice to have only one little defeat in four months, and a defeat where we could [afford] that defeat because it was over two legs. So it’s nice, a good feeling,’ he added.

‘We trust each other. One day we are going to lose. The important thing is, after that defeat, we go back again to a good run because the team is playing solidly.’

Manchester United will now turn their attention to their EFL Cup final against Southampton on Sunday.

The match at Wembley Stadium kicks off at 18:30.
