Inter Milan will face AC Milan in a blockbuster derby in the Champions League semi-finals after they played out to a 3-3 draw with Benfica which saw the Italians through 5-3 on aggregate on Wednesday evening.

The team led by Simone Inzaghi will play local rivals AC Milan in the quarterfinals. Goals from Nicolo Barella, Lautaro Martinez, and Joaquin Correa made it easy for them to qualify.

Both of Milan’s big teams want to be the first Serie A team to win Europe’s top club competition since Inter won it in 2010.

“It was a big night for everyone at the club, and we deserved to go through over the course of the two legs,” said Inzaghi.

“The players were incredible over the two matches. Getting to the semi-finals is a dream and now that we’re here we want to go try and go all the way.”

Inter had only won one of their last eight games, which was last week’s first leg in Portugal. They were in terrible shape going into Wednesday’s game.

After beating Napoli on Tuesday night, the Italian champions will play Milan twice next month. Those games are sure to be exciting.

It also ended Inter’s three-game losing streak at home, during which they hadn’t scored a single goal. It also kept their impressive cup season going, even though their league season isn’t going well.

Martinez and Correa’s goals ended worrying goalless streaks and made sure that Fredrik Aursnes, Antonio Silva, and Petar Musa’s goals for the away team didn’t change the result of the game.

“We’re really happy, we’re really proud to represent the badge and this great club,” said Martinez.

“We knew that this (going through) meant playing a derby in the semi-finals of the Champions League. I play this sport to win everything possible, I’m really happy to be in the semi-finals, this club deserves to be there.”

Silva and Musa scored late for Roger Schmidt’s team, but Inter had already made sure they would face Milan in the final on June 10 in Istanbul.
