Trending up: The revival of Ajax Cape Town

26 October 2016, Ajax Cape Town were sitting on the bottom of the Premier Soccer League and they couldn’t even buy a win, Roger de Sa resigned, fast forward till today the Urban Warriors are comfortable in 11th position with four wins in their last five games their latest victory coming in a 3-0 spanking of struggling Bloemfontein Celtic.

What a difference two months makes and what a difference a new voice in the dressing room makes. Stanley Menzo replaced Roger de Sa after the former resigned with immediate effect at the end of October.

Menzo’s team struggled at first only managing to pick up a point in their first three games but you could clearly see that the team was playing better. Their first win came against Platinum Stars in an entertaining 3-2 victory and the team has been on the up ever since.

The former Netherlands goalkeeper has shaken things up and has introduced players he used to coach in his development side into his first team.

The Cape Town outfit is playing exciting football under the stewardship of Menzo with pace, precision, and goals, lots, and lots of goals.

Trending Down: Steve Komphela survives but for how long

Steve Komphela was a bad result away from feeling the wrath of the Kaizer Chiefs supporters. Steve Komphela was an unsatisfactory result away from being abused on social media. Steve Komphela was a disappointing result away from being handed his walking papers and shown the door.

After the referee blew the final whilst Steve Komphela breathed a sigh of relief as his team stole all three points in the stoppage time against Polokwane City. Komphela’s job is safe – for now… The Kaizer Chiefs coach has been skating on thin ice lately, this is his side’s first win in eight games in all competitions.

The Glamour Boys are fourth on the table only four points behind league leaders Cape Town City so things aren’t as bleak as the Amakhosi faithful are making out to be.

Yes, the team isn’t playing so well, and yes, Komphela does make strange first team choices and even stranger substitutions, but if they could string a couple of good wins together they will be back in the championship conversation.

Then again, the supporters are unhappy, they don’t seem to like Steve very much, and even though he survived this round of fixtures should his team get poor result in their upcoming game you’d like to think that the jig will be up for the former the Maritzburg coach because he has dug himself a hole too deep to climb out of.
