SuperSport United midfielder Jamie Webber believes he is ready to fill the void left by former Matsatsantsa captain Dean Furman.

The club confirmed the departure of the Bafana Bafana midfielder on 18 May, following a successful six-year spell in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

Furman has gone on to enjoy a trophy-laden time at the Tshwane-based club but was released from his contract, which allowed the midfielder to move back to the UK amid league shutdowns because of the coronavirus pandemic.

However, Webber, who has already scored twice and assisted a further two from 15 appearances across all competitions, has welcomed the challenge of claiming his place in the heart of SuperSport’s midfield in coach Kaitano Tembo’s squad.

‘It’s an opportunity for me and for the other guys because Dean was a key player,’ Webber told the SundaySun print edition.

‘He was our captain, he had to play all the games guiding us and we looked up to him. But now that he’s not here, we obviously have to take matters into our own hands.

‘We have to play well for the club, do our best for the badge like we always say.’

‘I think we have the ability because all of us are young and this is a great opportunity to build a good relationship for years to come,’ he added.

‘I haven’t played much because I had a back injury. Now, there’s definitely an opportunity to play again and become a regular.’
