With Cape Town City sitting top of the log and Shakes Mashaba suspended from his role as Bafana Bafana head coach, Eric Tinkler has been forced to answer speculation linking him with the top job.

Axed by Orlando Pirates in June, Tinkler has taken to life in the Mother City superbly and is keen on continuing his developing as a coach at club level.

‘In terms of Bafana, no I haven’t [thought about it], no. I’m still looking to grow as a coach,’ said Tinkler, according to KickOff.

‘I’m still looking to achieve things as a coach, so that hasn’t even crossed my mind.’

City face their biggest test on Friday night when they travel to Johannesburg to face Bidvest Wits, themselves smarting following their first defeat against SuperSport United in midweek PSL action.

Tinkler’s side, playing an attractive, fast-flowing game, have beaten Mamelodi Sundowns and were unlucky not to beat both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates but will not face up to a stern test when taking to the field against Gavin Hunt’s well-drilled lineup.

Back on the subject of the speculation linking Tinkler with Mashaba’s job, the Cape Town City coach was not interested in discussing the matter especially while Mashaba is still officially the permanent coach.

‘I think there should be an ethos and a bit of ethics, from us as coaches, to not really [entertain speculation].

‘Bafana still have a coach. He done well against Senegal – got a great result – we should all be supporting him,’ said Tinkler.

Tinkler will be looking to add a positive result against Wits to his growing CV when City face Wits at 19:30.
