Mamelodi Sundowns have unveiled the club’s new ‘upgraded’ logo as they continue to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

The new crest was unveiled late on Tuesday evening as the club look to continually evolve while also paying tribute to their rich history.

The club released a statement on the new logo, its changes, and the reasoning behind it all.

Sundowns’ full statement:

‘Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary and today is revealing the upgraded logo which has been modernised to reflect the history and journey the Club has embarked on to the pinnacle of African football. Over the years, legends have etched their name into history, young talent has transcended to superstardom and the Sundowns Family have been able to live out their dreams on and off the pitch. Mamelodi Sundowns has, over the years, become an entrenched and integral part of the history and aspirations of the people of South Africa and the African Continent.

‘Understanding the love and passion that Masandawana have towards their badge, the Club and its supporters decided not to move too far away from their original logo. With that in mind, the Club took a decision in 2019 to give the members of the Mamelodi Sundowns Family the opportunity to participate and to be part of the designing of the logo through a unique and innovative competition.

‘The changes include the ribbon being shortened so that the proportion of the crest could be slightly magnified, the ribbon is bolder, the hands are more defined and the centre circle within the logo surrounding the hand has been removed. Some of these changes were necessitated by the modern media and advertising requirements.’

Mamelodi Sundowns spokesperson Alex Shakoane acknowledged the importance of celebrating 50 years of Mamelodi Sundowns: ‘The unveiling of the upgraded logo as part of the 50-year celebrations is important for the club. The rich history has given us the platform to grow the brand and achieve continental success. Sundowns made history in 2016 by becoming the first South African club during the PSL era to win the African Champions League and to participate in the Fifa Club World Cup.

‘We have ambitions to be one of the best clubs in Africa and to compete globally. Sundowns strives for victory and inspires its supporters and people in Africa and globally to pursue and realise their dreams. Hence our motto: ‘The Sky is the Limit”.

‘Although we are determined to be one of the best in Africa, we will always stay true to our roots and keep our feet firmly on the ground.’

The upgraded logo will be used for the latest Mamelodi Sundowns 2020-21 PUMA kit, which marks the beginning of the modernised brand identity rollout.
