Jeremy Brockie of Mamelodi Sundowns celebrates breaking his goal drought

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Jeremy Brockie has admitted that he has taken a lot of stick from Orlando Pirates fans during his goal drought, but he is looking forward to getting revenge when the two teams meet this weekend, writes DEAN WORKMAN.

Brockie signed for Masandawana in January but endured a tough goal-scoring drought where he didn’t hit the back of the net in a competitive clash for over a year, dating back to his time with SuperSport United.

The New Zealander, however, finally broke his Sundowns duck against Free State Stars on Wednesday as he fired home a fine volley in his side’s 3-1 win.

Speaking to the media at Chloorkop in the buildup to the crunch Absa Premiership match against Pirates, Brockie was asked about the difficulties he faced during his drought where he revealed that he endured abuse from fans of Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

‘I think the hardest part was mentally and trying to deal with it.

‘I think ever since I arrived in the country I scored goals consistently and then I got the move that I wanted to Sundowns and I knew it was going to be difficult but I thought I would have adapted quicker and it would have been a little bit easier for me.

‘But the longer the time goes without scoring, the more pressure you put on yourself and the more people start talking and hide behind their phones on social media and give you a lot of stick.

‘Most of them are Pirates and Chiefs fans, so I’m really looking forward to Saturday,’ added the former SuperSport United hitman.

‘I definitely want more [goals]. I feel very good for Saturday. I think now that the first one’s out of the way in a competitive game, hopefully they start free flowing and I keep myself in the starting XI and help the team to the top of the table where they should be,’ Brockie concluded.
