Mamelodi Sundowns picked up the point needed in a 0-0 draw with Cape Town City to secure a fifth successive league title on Wednesday evening.

The Brazilians were looking to put their disappointing Caf Champions League exit behind them when they faced the Citizens intent on playing the role of party poopers.

The home side threatened early on as Neo Maema forced Citizens goalkeeper Hugo Marques into a smart save with a powerful effort.

After looking so assertive earlier, Marques almost cost his side the opener as the Angolan shotstopper missed the flight of Modiba’s cross in the box allowing Rushine De Reuck a free header, but he couldn’t hit target.

Tinkler’s men managed to find their feet and were making it more difficult for their opponents to find space, while still posing a threat on the counter despite not troubling Sundowns keeper Denis Onyango as the first half finished 0-0.

Downs came out in the second half determined to find the opener and, just as in the first half, Maema had an early chance but his strike from the edge of the box was smothered by Marques.

Sundowns eventually looked to their bench as the game wore on but, even after the changes and throwing everything forward in search of a winner, they were forced to settle for a goalless draw.

The point, however, is enough for Sundowns to wrap up the league title with four games to spare.
