Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane believes Ugandan international Denis Onyango is the best goalkeeper in Africa.

The 33-year-old shot-stopper was recently nominated for the Caf African Player of the Year award, along with former Sundowns teammate Percy Tau.

Onyango also led his country to their second Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualification which will take place next year.

Apart from this Caf nomination, Onyango was voted as the best player in Africa over a year ago after helping the Brazilians lift their maiden Caf Champions League trophy.

Despite missing out last season to Kaizer Chiefs’ No 1, Itumeleng Khune, on being named Absa Premiership Goalkeeper of the Year, Mosimane considers Onyango to be the best Africa has to offer, qualifying that Khune is the best in South Africa.

Mosimane went on to say that if Onyango is nominated for that top PSL goalkeeper award this year, he will win it hands down, following this impressive display for Sundowns so far this season.

‘Denis is number one in Africa, let’s be honest,’ Mosimane said.

‘I am not talking about South Africa, I know it will be a problem. I am talking about Africa, continental football.

‘In South Africa for Bafana Bafana, Itu is number one. If you pick Bafana Bafana there is no doubt. Once you play across the board, [African] Cup of Nations, Denis qualifies.

‘Crosses, physical presence, he is monster. He is a typical African goalkeeper. You need to tell me who is better. To be honest, who is better in Africa? Because I watch the Champions League, I watch everybody. You go to Esperance, Wydad, Al Ahly, Setif, you go on, Denis is number one in Africa.

‘I think if he is nominated for Goalkeeper of the Year he is going to win it and it’s not going to be the first time. Maybe it would be the first time a goalkeeper wins African Player of the Year.’

The Ugandan shot-stopper has already won the 2016 African Player of the Year – based in Africa prize at the Caf Awards held in Nigeria.
