A Tapelo Nyongo screamer fired AmaZulu to a 1-0 win over Cape Town City in their Absa Premiership encounter at the King Zwelinthini Stadium on Saturday evening.

City came into the game looking to continue their fine form since the turn of the year after beating Kaizer Chiefs last week Wednesday. Benni McCarthy’s men also knew that a victory would send them level on points with Orlando Pirates in third.

AmaZulu, who also had a massive win last time out as they beat Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0, were looking to pull further away from the teams towards the bottom of the league.

The Citizens were offered a golden opportunity to open the scoring with just five minutes played after Mbongeni Gumede brought down Kermit Erasmus and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.

Erasmus picked himself up to take the spot kick, but his tame effort was well saved by Siyabonga Mbatha in the Usuthu goal.

City continued to press forward and had another opening 13 minutes later when Gift Links got on the end of some lovely build-up but again Mbatha came out trumps as he stormed off his line to block the young wingers’ effort.

Cavin Johnsons men finally found their feet but were struggling to create any clear-cut chances.

0-0 at the half-time break and McCarthy would be upset that his side was not in the lead.

City again came close at the start of the second stanza as a free kick on the angle from Teko Modise skimmed the top of the bar with Mbatha stranded

The away side were eventually made to pay for their wastefulness as AmaZulu side hit the front in the 64th minute after a Tapelo Nyongo screamer. The defender struck a powerful curling effort past Peter Leeuwenburgh from a free kick just outside the box.

McCarthy’s men then went on the offensive while the home side were quite happy to sit deep and look to be difficult to break down.

Try as they might City could not break down a stubborn AmaZulu defence as the team from the KZN held on for a vital three points.
