In-form playmaker Joseph Molangoane cannot wait to become involved in the Soweto Derby as Kaizer Chiefs look to heap further pain on struggling rivals Orlando Pirates.

‘I can’t wait for Saturday to arrive,’ an excited Joseph Molangoane told his club’s website ahead of the Soweto Derby on Saturday.

Molangoane joined Kaizer Chiefs at the beginning of the season, but only made his debut on 3 December 2016, due to contractual issues with his former side, Chippa United.

Since making his debut against Chippa, Molangoane has been a regular starter and played an influential role in Chiefs winning five league matches in a row. He has scored one goal and provided one assist in his eight appearances to date in the black and gold of Amakhosi.

This magnificent run ended last Saturday against Ajax Cape Town, with the match ending in a one-all draw, a result which frustrated the Glamour Boys.

‘That was not nice and not what we wanted,’ the speedy winger says. ‘We were obviously looking for the three points, but it happens and the result doesn’t come your way.’

The 28-year-old, who grew up in Alexandra, played during the 2013-2014 season for Orlando Pirates, but never got a run out in the Derby, a position that is likely to change on Saturday.

‘Just sitting on the bench, I realised how big the Derby is,’ Molangoane said. ‘I am really looking forward to Saturday’s match and, hopefully, I get the opportunity to play.’

The winger also admits that he had a chat with left back Tsepo Masilela about the Soweto Derby. ‘Tsepo gave me some advice and insight on how to approach the match,’ reveals Molangoane.

‘We just want the maximum points.’

‘Tight’ is happy with his own form under Steve Komphela, but stresses that the need for the team to succeed is far more important than individual honours.

‘Every game I play for Chiefs is a great feeling. Soccer is a team sport. Of course, I want to contribute by scoring a goal or give an assist for a teammate to finish. However, in the end, it’s not about me, I am just part of the collective, we win and lose as a team.’

After an impressive start life at Naturena, it comes as no surprise that Molangoane has been well received by the legions of adoring fans.

‘They are really amazing. It’s such an indescribable feeling to play in front of such big crowds, as recently happened in Durban when we beat Highlands Park. The enthusiasm of our fans really pushes me to the next level. You don’t want to disappoint them. You want to win the game for the supporters, because they are really unbelievable.’

Kaizer Chiefs host Orlando Pirates at the FNB Stadium on Saturday. The match kicks off at 15:30.
