David Mathebula has revealed that he is still contracted to SuperSport United even though he has not been training with the first-team squad.

The 33-year-old looked to set to part ways with the club during the January transfer window after falling out of favour with head coach Stuart Baxter.

Mathebula is yet to make an appearance for SuperSport this season, having last played during their 3-2 victory over Orlando Pirates in May 2016.

The former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder has confirmed that he is set to leave the club at the end of the season and will be free to any club willing to sign him.

‘For now, I am still contracted to SuperSport United though I am no longer training with the team,’ Mathebula told KickOff.com.

‘What happened was that I wanted to move out during the January transfer window but things eventually didn’t work out well for me. With my family here in Johannesburg, it wasn’t so easy for me to just move out just like that because I first needed to sort out that.

‘So I will now be moving ahead of the start of the next season. At the end of the season when my contract expires I will be free [to join another club] and though I know that training alone as a footballer is dangerous I am still keen to play on.

‘I am also aware that it will be a challenge to move on to another team considering that I haven’t played for a while but I believe I can still do the job,’ he added.

Over the course of his career, Mathebula has scored 27 goals and has assisted a further 26 from 215 appearances in all competitions playing for the likes of Dynamos, Kaizer Chiefs, Mpumalanga Black Aces, Moroka Swallows and SuperSport United.

SuperSport United will now travel to Loftus Versfeld Stadium when they lock horns with Mamelodi Sundowns in what is expected to be an entertaining Absa Premiership clash on Thursday.

Kick-off has been set for 18:00.
