Willard Katsande missed a late penalty as Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates played out to a 1-1 draw in their Soweto derby match at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

The Buccaneers got off to a bright start in the opening exchanges of the match as Amakhosi goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune sprung into action with two fine saves to deny Dove Wome.

However, Amakhosi broke the deadlock in the 16th minute when Siphiwe Tshabalala played Bernard Parker through on goal, before he set up Joseph Molangoane for the simple tap-in.

The Buccaneers then levelled matters in the 32nd minute when Thembinkosi Lorch volleyed the ball into the back of the net, after taking a deflection off of Tsepo Masilela.

In the first 45 minutes of the match, the scoreline was locked at 1-1 as the match went into the half-time interval.

The tempo did not slow down in the second half, but neither side could carve out any real clear-cut opportunities at goal as the score remained 1-1.

However, Chiefs were then awarded a penalty in the 82nd minute when Ayanda Gcaba was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area. Katsande stepped up to take the spot-kick, but had his effort saved by the legs of Pirates shot-stopper Brighton Mhlongo.

Chiefs pressed forward in search of the winning goal in the closing stages with Eric Mathoho going the closest with his headed effort at goal, but both sides were forced to share the spoils in a thrilling Soweto derby at the FNB Stadium.
