Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt bemoaned his side’s performance against Baroka despite them claiming an emphatic 5-0 victory at the Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday evening.

REACTION: SSU put four Maritzburg, Wits thrash Baroka

The Clever Boys took the lead in the 31st minute when Buhle Mkhwanazi headed in a well-executed free-kick and they soon made it 2-0 when Daine Klate scored from close range.

Mkhwanazi grabbed his brace in the 74th minute and new signing  Ejike Uzoenyi came off the bench to score his first goal for his new club. Substitute Phakamani Mahlambi put the icing on the cake with a 90th-minute strike to seal a comprehensive 5-0 win for the Students.

However, the large margin of victory for Wits wasn’t enough to impress their coach, who was very critical of his team’s showing on the night.

‘We didn’t start very well. We didn’t play very well. Forget about the score, I don’t think we kept the ball very well and sort of played in first gear the whole night,’ Hunt said after the match.

The former SuperSport United coach was particularly unimpressed with his side’s inability to make use of the possession they had.

‘Tonight when we won the ball in midfield the first ball was bad. I thought we could have done a little better with that first ball and we could really have opened them up. So we weren’t really on song tonight but it was a good team performance,’ he said.

Hunt believes that his team’s tough fixture schedule has impacted on their performances but emphasised the importance of getting the job done, even when his team is not in top form.

‘When you’re playing back-to-back games you have to grind a few results even when you’re not playing well. We did that tonight and that’s important.’ he concluded.

Bidvest Wits will now take on defending PSL champions Mamelodi Sundowns at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday.

Kick-off is set for 18:00.
