Al Ahly striker Amr Gamal has hit out at his former manager at Bidvest Wits, Gavin Hunt, calling him ‘arrogant and racist’ as he revealed how his time at the club ended.

The striker joined the Clever Boys in the summer of 2017 from the Egyptian giants and made only 19 appearances, scoring on five occasions and providing one assist. He did help lead them to glory in the Telkom Knockout, where he was named Player of the Tournament.

However, events then dramatically turned for the worse. The player has now revealed he got into a physical altercation with Hunt, which severely affected his time at the club.

‘I was the team’s top goalscorer and I led them to win the cup. But the coach insulted and humiliated me and we even had a physical altercation. I was only defending myself,’ the 28-year-old told the OnTime Sport 2 TV channel.

‘He was arrogant and a racist, even his statements were provocative. They didn’t allow me to play even though I was the team’s top-scorer. He told me: “I won’t let you return to Al Ahly and you won’t play in the World Cup”,’ he added.

The forward also alleges that Hunt hindered his chances of going to the 2019 World Cup in Russia with the Egyptian national team by blocking a potential move to Rubin Kazan.

‘And at the time I received an offer from Rubin Kazan, I thought it would’ve been a great opportunity for me and a chance to play in the World Cup in Russia.

‘Al Ahly didn’t mind the transfer, but Bidvest refused to let me go and the transfer window eventually closed. That’s why I was forced to play in Finland.

‘Playing in the World Cup was my right because I played all of the qualifying games. My ticket was booked and I was in the squad, then one day I wake up to find out that I wasn’t included.

‘I cried for a week after my exclusion. I respect Cuper [Egypt’s manager at the time] but I didn’t understand his decision,’ he concluded.

After a short six-month spell in Finland, Gamal returned to his boyhood club Al Ahly. The forward, though, continued to struggle as he failed to make a single appearance during the 2017-18 season, before joining Tala’a El-Geish where currently plies his trade.
