A 95th minute injury time header by Azubuike Egwueke earned SuperSport United a 1-1 draw against Cape Town City on Saturday, writes MARSHALL GOUTS.

The home side went into the game on the back of a 0-0 draw with Ajax Cape Town, while Cape Town City slumped to a 4-2 defeat against Maritzburg United in their last PSL fixture.

The encounter got off to a slow start with both sides easing into their stride in the opening exchanges.

SuperSport looked the brighter of the two sides in the final third and came close to opening the scoring in the 13th minute but Thuso Phala’s defence splitting pass proved a tad too hard for Jeremy Brockie.

Neither side’s goalkeepers were really tested for majority of the first-half, largely due to the overly-defensive approach adopted by both sides in addition to chances missed by the likes of Brockie and Victor Obinna respectively.

City grabbed the lead in the 44th minute courtesy of a strike by winger Aubrey Ngoma. Benni McCarthy’s side went into the half-time break with a 1-0 lead.

The home side upped the tempo in the second stanza, but looked disjointed in their attempts at finding an equaliser.

Brockie made way in the 54th minute for Reneilwe Letsholoyane, while Roland Putsche replaced Obinna who landed an elbow to the face by Richard Boateng.

City should have doubled their lead in the 61st minute when Ngoma’s smart ball into the area found Sibusiso Masina, but the midfielder was unable to find the back of the net despite getting the better of his marker, much to the annoyance of coach McCarthy.

Sage Stephens made a good save to keep his sides lead intact as he kept out Sifiso Myeni’s left-footed shot in the 67th minute.

Lyle Lakay came on for goalscorer Ngoma, while Aubrey Modiba replaced Teboho Mokoena.

Tinkler opted for his final roll of the dice as youngster Sipho Mbule replaced Myeni. The move paid dividends as Modiba provided an inch-perfect cross for Egwueke to head home.
