Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Dennis Onyango have been named the Absa Premiership Coach and Player of the Month for April.

Davids, who is now in his third stint as interim coach for the coastal club, led his side to three victories from four matches during April, which saw him win his maiden Coach of the Month award.

Davids insists his award was boiled down to a team effort, while also hoping his side can secure a finish in the top eight this season.

‘It has always been a team effort, I could not have done it on my own,’ Davids said after winning the award.

‘I think the Top eight battle will go down to the last match. We are not there yet although everything is in our hands.

‘I want my team to focus on the last two matches. That is why I prefer not to talk about the head coach/interim issue.

‘At the moment, it is in Bidvest Wits’ hands because they are three points ahead but it is still wide open. I think the title race will also go to the last match of the season.

‘I think the league on all fronts (relegation, top eight and title) will go down to the last round of fixtures.’

Onyango was recognised for his stellar performances in goals during which saw the Brazilians went five matches without a conceding a single goal.

‘I am happy to win this award. It is a recognition for the hard work I have put in,’ Onyango

‘We still believe that we can still win the league. We will keep fighting.’

Meanwhile, Mxolisi Kunene walked away with the Absa Premiership Goal of the Month award following his goals against Kaizer Chiefs.

‘I would like to thank all the fans who voted for me and the goal I scored,’ Kunene said.

The Players and Coach of the Month were selected by a panel of judges made up of members of the media and football analysts and was convened by Farouk Khan.
