Orlando Pirates co-coach Fadlu Davids is disappointed his side did not make the most of their chances against Maritzburg United in Pietermaritzburg.

The Buccaneers extended their winless run to four games after they were held to a goalless draw at the Harry Gwala Stadium against the Team of Choice on Wednesday.

The draw moves Pirates up to sixth place in the DStv Premiership standings on 10 points, while United sit in 11th place with seven points after seven games.

“Quite disappointing in the first half, not to take advantage of the opportunities we created. Of course, on the other hand, you have to give credit to the opponent for their defensive display,” Davids told SuperSport TV post-game.

“Yes, they never had a shot on target or disturbed our goalkeeper, but then it falls on us to be able to unlock the defensive line. Of course, with them playing four centre backs, they changed to the second half with five at the back, you need to be creative and unlock the defensive block you are presented with.

“We tried to go through the centre, not possible. We tried to go with extreme width. Not really possible. And very unfortunate not to get the goal to unlock the game.”

Although there were a number of players missing from the squad due to their participation in the Caf Confederation Cup this past weekend, Davids refused to use that as an excuse for their performance against United.

“We don’t really want to complain about our players that are not available. We want to put the trust in the players that are available. Of course, the lineups are changing because of Caf last week,” he added.

“Players not registered, joining us too late. And now, yes, you make a lot of changes. It’s about juggling the squad. Not crying about players not here and really putting trust in the players to produce results.”
