Kaizer Chiefs beat Free State Stars 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time to lift the Bokone Bophirima Maize Cup on Saturday, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.

Amakhosi started the game off brightly and nearly broke the deadlock in the opening stages of the match, but Stars goalkeeper Badra Ali Sangare was on hand to keep the scoreline level at 0-0.

Kabelo Mahlasela nearly opened the scoring in the 21st minute, but the midfielder failed to hit the target with his effort from close range.

Chiefs eventually broke the deadlock eight minutes later Leonardo Castro latched onto a Khama Billiat cross before finding the net with his volley.

Castro nearly doubled his side’s lead six minutes before the break, but Sangare made a good save to deny the striker.

The Glamour Boys went into the half-time interval with a 1-0 lead over Ea Lla Koto.

Ea Lla Koto came out the better side in the second half as Harris Tschilbou drew his side level on the hour mark, but his overhead kick was well saved by Chiefs goalkeeper Virgil Vries.

Stars were then awarded a penalty eight minutes before time. Eleazar Rodgers stepped up and made no mistake from the spot-kick to make it 1-1.

The two sides could not be separated in regulation time and the match had to be settled through penalties.

However, Chiefs came out victorious after winning the penalty shoot-out 6-5.
