After weeks of rumours swirling around the club’s dire financial situation, news emerged on Friday evening that suggested Bloemfontein Celtic have allegedly submitted a provisional application to liquidate the club.

The South Africa Football Players Union (SAFPU) revealed via Twitter that it would meet with the players of the club to ‘advise players on a way forward with regards to the provisional application to liquidate Bloemfontein Celtics’.

‘The club is unable to meet its financial obligations with the players’ unpaid salaries being at the heart of it,’ the statement concluded while also attaching pictures of the alleged application to liquidate.

Earlier in the week, it had emerged that the Siwelele players were willing to go on strike after not receiving their last months’ salaries.

With a source reportedly telling SoccerLaduma.co.za that ‘The players at Bloemfontein Celtic haven’t yet been paid their salaries for last month. The situation is bad.’

Speaking to SoccerLaduma on condition of anonymity, one of the senior players at Celtic added, ‘We haven’t been paid our salaries for the past month. How can we play and perform to the best of our abilities when the club hasn’t paid us our salaries? We had a meeting with the club on Tuesday and what the chairman has been saying is that he doesn’t have money. The entire team was in that meeting.

‘All the players, Steve [Komphela] and his technical team were in that meeting. The chairman told us that the meeting was called because he wanted to sort out the issue of outstanding salaries. Normally we are getting paid on the 28th day of the month but we still haven’t received our salaries up to this day.’

The club has yet to comment on whether the allegations levelled by the SAFPU are true or not.

More is likely to follow in this developing story.
