Cape Town City v Kaizer Chiefs
  • Post published:April 26, 2017

Cape Town City took a huge leap towards clinching their maiden Absa Premiership title with a dramatic 3-2 victory against fellow title-contenders Kaizer Chiefs on Tuesday night.

The race to clinch the title has reached its final stretch and will be a five-way battle involving City, Mamelodi Sundowns, Bidvest Wits, Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United.

The Citizens remain at the summit of the table following their victory against Chiefs, who drop to fourth position on the table. The Mother City outfit have more than shown their mettle in their debut campaign, which was indicative in their last two league fixtures that saw them take four points from Wits and Chiefs.

Eric Tinkler’s men will face SuperSport on 9 May, in a game which will have a major bearing on the title race for both teams. In essence, if they play to a stalemate, they could possibly boot one another out of the title race.

Title-holders Mamelodi Sundowns maintained their hopes of retaining their league title with a 2-0 victory against Ajax Cape Town on Tuesday. The win saw Sundowns leapfrog Chiefs into second spot on the table. Pitso Mosimane’s charges can be buoyed by the fact that they have played two less games than City, meaning that if they are to win their remaining PSL games, they will retain their league title.

Chiefs, SuperSport and Wits cannot be ruled out of the title race. However, due to their current points deficits and games to be played, it could prove problematic for their bids to clinch the title.

Chiefs face Wits in their final league encounter of the season, while SuperSport, who are  nine points behind the table-toppers, still need to do duty against Chiefs and City respectively.

Wits occupy third spot and are two points behind City, but have a tough run-in, as they still have to face Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Chiefs.

Pirates have endured a dismal season thus far and occupy ninth spot on the table, four points behind eighth-placed Golden Arrows, who have played two more games.

Pirates face relegation-threatened Baroka on Wednesday night, with both teams in desperate need of victories, as only six points separate them.

Platinum Stars host Free State Stars on Wednesday, with Dikwena needing victory to keep their keep their top-eight hopes alive.

The bottom-of-the-table sees Free State Stars, Highlands Park and Baroka battle it out to remain in the top-flight,  however it must be noted that the margins between the ninth and 16th-placed teams aren’t that great, which could mean a good run of form by any of the above teams coupled by a slump in form by those above them could result in another team(s) becoming relegation candidates.
