Former Orlando Pirates star Benni McCarthy has sent a message to Kaizer Chiefs following their heartbreak on the final day of the PSL, telling Amakhosi to dust themselves off and go again because Chiefs is too big an institution to dwell on the past.

The Glamour Boys narrowly missed out on the league title after they drew on the final day with Baroka, while Mamelodi Sundowns beat Black Leopards to finish two points clear at the top.

The Soweto giants may have led the title race for the vast majority of the season, but failed to regain their early-season form inside the bio-bubble following the resumption of football coming out of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Chiefs have now seen their trophy drought extended to five years, the longest period in the club’s history.

McCarthy, though known as a former Pirates star, showed his support for the club as he posted a message on Chiefs’ official Instagram account.

“Heartbreaking indeed, this really has been the most difficult year we [have] all been a part of. The pandemic outbreak has hit hard, losing the league [crying and heartbroken emoji],” said the Bafana Bafana icon.

“Dust yourself off and go again guys, Chiefs is too big of an institution to dwell on the past. Look forward to a better and brighter future. Will Rise Again. Love and Peace.”

McCarthy has been without a coaching job since parting ways with Cape Town City in November last year, and his message has since sparked widespread speculation that he could eyeing a return to the PSL with Chiefs should Ernst Middendorp be relieved of his duties.
