Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy can’t fathom why Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana hasn’t won the PSL Footballer of the Season award.

McCarthy and his troops witnessed another trademark Kekana performance when he left City keeper Peter Leeuwenburgh rooted to the spot with his thunderous strike from distance.

Despite Kekana’s goal, the Citizens fought back to secure a 1-1 draw at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in the Absa Premiership on Tuesday.

However, McCarthy has questioned why Kekana has not won the Footballer of the Season after losing to Thembinkosi Lorch last season and Percy Tau the campaign before.

‘The goal of the season from one of the best players in the last 10 years in the country, Hlompho Kekana,’ McCarthy told the media.

‘The kid has not been recognised enough. Four years unbelievable, season back to back. He put in [the work] and how he has not been Player of the Season is beyond me.’

Cape Town City will be hoping to return to winning ways when they welcome Kaizer Chiefs to Newlands Stadium on Tuesday, with kick-off set for 7:30pm.
