SuperSport United coach Stuart Baxter says he was pleased with his side’s second-half performance after coming from a goal down to defeat Maritzburg United on Wednesday.

Matsatsantsa cruised to a comfortable 4-1 victory over the Team of Choice but went into the half-time interval trailing through a goal by Kurt Lentjies.

However, four second-half goals by and Mandla Masango, Kingston Nkhatha and Jeremy Brockie saw his side come back to walk away with all three points.

Baxter admits that he was disappointed with his side’s first-half performance but insists Matsatsantsa came out a more hungry team in the second half.

‘I think the first 20 minutes were poor. We didn’t get on the ball and we didn’t play. A blue shirt didn’t give a ball to a blue shirt. We gave them a horrendous goal from a defensive point of view,’ Baxter said after the match.

‘After 20 minutes I felt we started to put together some better movement around the box and had some quality possession and more intelligent defending. We had a talk at half-time and changed a couple of things and had a big response in the second-half.’

The 63-year-old coach has praised Mandla Masango’s performance after producing a Man of the Match performance, while also scoring a brace to help his side collect all three points.

‘Mandla has come back and has had a half and a half. He’s had to learn how we play because we don’t play exactly how we used to play before [When both at Kaizer Chiefs] and he’s got used to it and he deserved his goals tonight,’ He added.

‘It was very good performance.’

Matsatsantsa are currently placed third in the Absa Premiership standing with 32 points, having won eight out of 17 matches played so far this season.

SuperSport United will next take on take on Highlands Park in the Absa Premiership on Saturday.

The match at the Makhulong Stadium kicks off at 20:15.
