Mamelodi Sundowns advanced to the MTN8 semi-finals after claiming a 2-0 victory over Golden Arrows at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.

The game got off to a slow start with both side’s trying to find their rhythm in the opening exchanges of the match

The first real opportunity came after 24 minutes when Danny Venter unleashed from distance, but Kennedy Mweene did well to deny him.

Sundowns had a chance of their own six minutes later after Jeremy Brockie’ effort at goal, but the Arrows shot-stopper was on hand to make a good save.

A minute later, Sibusiso Vilakazi should have broken the deadlock after Themba Zwane played the midfielder through on goal, but he blazed his effort over.

However, Vilakazi redeemed himself in the 40th minute when he found the back of the net from the edge of the box after some great build-up play by Sundowns.

The home side went into the half-time interval with a 1-0 lead over Arrows.

Arrows came out with more intent in the second half and South Africa nearly levelled matters in the 51st minute, but Knox Mutizwa was unable to direct his effort towards goal as it sailed high and wide of the target.

Gaston Sirino had a chance to double Sundowns lead six minutes later, but the winger couldn’t steer his effort on target.

The Brazilians doubled their lead after 70 minutes when Sirino picked out an unmarked Wayne Arendse, who headed the ball home at the far post.

The visitors had a chance to reduce the deficit in the 81st minute, but his volley flew over the bar.

The home side managed to hold on to their two-goal lead over Arrows until the final whistle to advance into the MTN8 semi-final.
