Cape Town City chairman John Comitis has promised the players half of the R8-million winners’ cheque after they defeated SuperSport United in the MTN8 final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

Goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh emerged as the hero, saving spot-kicks from Bradley Grobler and Reneilwe Letsholoyonyane to ensure that the club lifted their first piece of silverware under coach Benni McCarthy.

The players will walk away with half of the R8-million won in Durban on Saturday, according to Comitis.

‘We usually go 50-50 with the players. That has always been like that,’ he told the media after the MTN8 final.

‘They have put in their share and we’ve put in our share. That’s usually how we do it. The players will get half. Players won’t even be bothered about that at this stage. They are so happy to have a trophy in the cabinet. That is the most important thing for us and their careers,’ he added.

Comitis attributed the club’s goal-driven nature as a major factor for them experiencing such success despite being a fairly new club in the top flight.

The Citizens reached their third cup final in only three years – winning two out the three (Telkom Knockout and MTN8 title).

‘The way we run our club, we are results-orientated. Players we bring must be able to get us results and take us to the next level. When we see it working … we then realise that we are on a right track. We want to continue doing this.

‘Make no mistake, if we weren’t winning from the beginning, we wouldn’t be the brand we are today. You’ve got to win things in order to be taken seriously,’ he concluded.
