Benni McCarthy was pleased that with the efforts of his Cape Town City side, but felt that the MTN8 final against SuperSport United shouldn’t have gone to penalties.

The Citizens dominated proceedings from the offset in the MTN8 final clash played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday night, however the Mother City outfit could not turn their array of goalscoring opportunities to goals.

McCarthy admits that he lost faith in his team securing the result as team went on due to the events that transpired in the 2017 version of the tournament where SuperSport goalkeeper Ronwen Williams stood tall to see Matsatsantsa being crowned champions

The Citizens coach said ultimately he was extremely happy for his players, who continue to make the the necessary sacrifices to reach their optimal on a daily basis.

‘These guys come to work every single day‚ they train and they want to improve‚ they want to better themselves and you see vast improvements every game‚’ McCarthy said in post-match comments.

‘We’ve kept up our integrity in believing that we can play through any team and in the end I thought SuperSport said‚ “you know what‚ we are fighting a losing battle” and they ended up sitting back.

‘I was disappointed that we didn’t finish the game off in the 90 minutes,’ he concluded.
