Fortaleza defender David Luiz is expecting a “great game” when his two former clubs, Chelsea and Flamengo clash in the Club World Cup on Friday evening.
The 38-year-old has had a highly successful time at Chelsea, winning the Premier League title, Champions League, two Europa Leagues and an FA Cup title while scoring 18 goals and registering 11 assists in 248 appearances in his four-years at the club
The Brazilian also spent three years at Flamengo, where he made 132 appearances, scoring four goals and creating two assists, and winning four trophies, including two Copa do Brasil titles, one Copa Libertadores, and a Campeonato Carioca title.
Luiz has since given his verdict on the upcoming clash between Chelsea and Flamengo, but is torn between the two clubs, having shown his loyalty to both teams.
“I think it’s going to be a great game,” Luiz said.
“Chelsea have been on an upward curve, with new ideas, new players – they’re a new side. The club was under a different owner when I was there, and a lot has changed since.
“There’s a new chairman, long contracts for young players, a lot of changes have been made to try and grow the team over the past few years, and we’re seeing the results!”
He added: “Flamengo are a team who win things, and there are a lot of changes year on year.”
“That’s not a surprise as they are always hungry for more. When you win, you’re on cloud nine, but when you lose, it’s hell.
“They are in very capable hands with Filipe Luis, who was a great team-mate of mine and is a brilliant coach, and he has a strong squad at his disposal.
“I think that squad over the last couple of years has been the best we’ve seen at Flamengo. I think it’s going to be a very, very special match,” he concluded.
