Watch Arsene Wenger’s reaction after his Arsenal side lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid in their Europa League semi-final second leg, knocking them out of the competition and ending the Frenchman’s hopes of the perfect send-off.

The Gunners were desperate for success in the Europa League as their league form has seen them fall away from the Champions League qualification spots. They, however, were denied a spot in final after a 2-1 aggregate loss to Diego Simeone’s charges and as a result, the side will not be competing in the Champions League next season.

Arsenal came into the second leg off the back of a 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium, knowing they needed to score at least one goal at the Wanda Metropolitano. Atletico, however, are notorious for their strong defensive home record where they have not conceded a goal in 12 matches.

Wenger will now finish his Arsenal career without lifting a European Cup and when he was asked what that feels like he said, ‘Well it’s very sad. Very very very sad. I’m very sad tonight but unfortunately you have to go through that in our game it is like that, it can be very cruel. Sometimes very nice but the suffering is of course strong tonight.’
