Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Alexis Sanchez was their hero against Hull City after scoring a brace at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

The 28-year-old has now been involved in 66 of the Gunners goals from 90 Premier League matches and has scored seven in only four league appearances against the Tigers.

Following his brace against the Tigers, his 67-year-old manager says the Chilean forward’s mentality is what makes him so lethal in front of goal.

‘Alexis has a striker’s mentality, which means he never gives up and fights until the end. That’s why I believe he is at that level,’ Wenger told the Arsenal website.

‘We started quite well against Hull and created many chances, but once we went one goal up, we became protective,” he added. “In the second half we played with just one worry: security.

‘You could see the fans were edgy and anxious as well. On top of that we had the bad luck of playing against a good team, and that explains what happened today.’

Wenger continued to say that his side are starting to gain their confidence back after suffering back-to-back defeats in the Premier League against Watford and Chelsea.

‘I know that the confidence drops quickly when you have two big disappointing results, and that’s why today the mathematics were more important than the way we played to win the game.

‘It was just (about) three points. We did it in a focused, resilient way and that’s what I demanded. Sometimes it’s not about how, but to win your confidence back you have to win the game.’

Arsenal now turn their attention to the Champions League when they take on Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

The match at the Allianz-Arena kicks off at 21:45.
