Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero believes former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer deserves to be at the top of the most goals in the Premier League list.

The 28-year-old still has a long way to go to reach Shearer’s tally of 260 goals during his career, with Aguero currently on 107 goals for City and is two goals away from breaking into the top 20 and overtaking Ryan Giggs in 20th position.

The Argentine international says that the former Newcastle striker has earned the right to be at the top of the all-time leading goals scorers list in the Premier League.

‘There are some great names in the Premier League top 20, but without a doubt, for his goal tally and lead over everybody else, Alan Shearer deserves to be on the podium,’ he told the Manchester City website.

Aguero says he is not phased at breaking records and he believes his number one priority is to help the team going forward, despite continuing to climb City’s top 10 all-time goalscorers list.

‘Records have never meant much to me if I’m honest. It’s nice to break them, I admit, but they aren’t a big priority to me.

‘Having said that, it still makes me proud to stand where I am in the Club’s all-time list. If I can keep racking up goals, I hope they come for the benefit of the team and football club, and not just to create personal records.’

Manchester City take on Everton in the Premier League on Saturday. The match at Etihad Stadium kicks off at 16:00.
