Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu were both in continental action on Friday evening with the Buccaneers held to a 0-0 draw away to Diables Noirs in the second preliminary round of the Caf Confederation Cup, while Ushutu were played to a goalless draw by Congolese giants TP Mazembe in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie.

Diables Noirs 0-0 Orlando Pirates

Despite the home side getting off to an aggressive start the first half saw neither side really do enough to threaten the goal.

Things, however, livened up in the second half as Siyabonga Mpontshane was forced into a good save to stop a powerful volley.

Pirates had chances of their own a Mabasa header which flew narrowly wide but then almost gave a goal away at the other end as a mix-up at the back led to a ball coming off the post.

It was back and forth in the closing stages with both sides having chances to win it but neither providing the clinical touch when needed resulting in a stalemate.

AmaZulu 0-0 TP Mazembe

In a pretty dull encounter at the Moses Mabida Stadium neither side managed to show enough cutting edge during the opening 45 minutes.

With Ushutu struggling to break down a well-drilled defensive unit Benni McCarthy turned to his bench, but it was the visitors who made the vital opening in the 72nd minute after Christian Kouame played Sozé Zemanga through on goal, but keeper Mothwa was quick off his line to thwart the attacker.

With AmaZulu drawing a blank in front of goal they will now need to produce a result in the Congo to seal their progression.
