Mamelodi Sundowns cruised to a 3-0 win over Petro de Luanda in their opening Caf Champions League fixture at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday night.

The Brazilians were looking to get off to a strong start to their group at home as coach Pitso Mosimane made five changes to the side that beat AmaZulu on Tuesday evening, with Thapelo Morena, Tebogo Langerman, Wayne Arendse, Mauricio Affonso and Gaston Sirino all being drafted back into the team.

It did not take the 2016 Caf Champions League champions long to get going as Affonso fired them ahead in the seventh minute as he got on the end of a Sirino cross before arrowing his header into the bottom corner.

The home side then doubled their lead after 30 minutes as this time Motjeka Madisha was picked out at the backpost by Langerman before heading home.

Sphelele Mkhulise almost made it 3-0 just before the break but his long-range effort was well saved by Campos Alberto Adao.

The Angolan side showed improvements at the start of the second stanza as they looked to get back in the game, but Sundowns were still controlling the game and Mosimane looked content with his team just containing their opponents.

Sundowns though eventually managed to kill the game with 14 minutes left to play after he produced a composed finish after getting on the end of a Sirino through ball.

A comfortable 3-0 win for Sundowns at the end as they go top of group C after USM Alger and Wydad Casablanca played to a 1-1 draw in their opener.

Sundowns will next be in action in the Champions League next week when they travel to Morocco to take on Wydad Casablanca next Saturday.
