Mamelodi Sundowns defender Brian Onyango says they achieved their goal of starting on a high note and collecting three points following their victory over Al-Hilal Omdurman in their Caf Champions League Group A opener.

The Brazilians got their group-stage campaign off to a winning start following their narrow 1-0 victory over Al-Hilal Omdurman at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg this past Friday evening.

The result moved Sundowns to the top of the Group A standings with three points, while the Sudan side dropped to the foot of the table and  have yet to secure their first point in the group.

Having met before in last year’s group stages, where Sundowns won 2-0 in the first leg before playing out to a goalless draw away from home, Onyango insisted that his side prepared themselves well for the battle.

“It’s the first game of the Champions League, we wanted to start on a high note and get three points, and we did it,” Onyango told his club’s official website.

“We prepared for them in training, and the coaches told us that we must be ready to jump, and that’s what we expected from them and we did well as the backline. We are all leaders at the back, and that’s what kept us going.”

Mamelodi Sundowns will now turn their attention to the DStv Premiership when they take on Baroka FC at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Monday evening, with kick-off set for 7:30pm.
