The Confederation of African football has announced the new dates for the African Cup of Nations (Afcon), with the tournament now set to take place from 21 June to 13 July 2019 after a request from the hosts, Egypt.

The decision was taken after an emergency committee meeting held on Saturday in Cairo, Egypt.

The North African country was confirmed as the new hosts of the tournament earlier this year after Cameroon were stripped of the hosting rights towards the end of 2018 due to a lack of preparation and security concerns.

Caf subsequently informed all affiliated federations about the decision in a letter sent by deputy secretary general Anthony Baffoe.

The letter revealed that the draw for the Afcon will take place on 21 April in Cairo.

In its new 24-team format, the tournament will be held from 21 June to 13 July this year.

Caf also confirmed that Cameroon will have to win their remaining game against Comoros to qualify for the Afcon. Egypt qualify as hosts, although they had already sealed their spot in the tournament before being named hosts.
