Maritzburg United turned into unlikely villains as they ended Kaizer Chiefs’s nine-match winning run by earning a point in their PSL clash at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

Khama Billiat returned to bolster Chiefs in front of a capacity crowd alongside Siyabonga Ngezana. The hosts were able to call on Jeremy Brockie, who was forced to miss his side’s Telkom Knockout loss to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Billiat squandered his side’s first chance but Lebogang Manyama and Samir Nurkovic worked together to send Amakhosi in front with 20 minutes played.

Maritzburg g0alkeepr Richard Ofori was at hand to deny Leonardo Castro ten minutes later before Judas Moseamedi drew his side level after a mistake by Willard Katsande.

Daylon Claasen failed put his side in front with 20 minutes to play from the six-yard mark after Keagan Buchanan was brought down by Katsande.

It was all the home side towards the end with Daniel Morgan denied by the crossbar before Moseamedi fluffed his lines looking for a late winner.

In the day’s other game, AmaZulu earned a 2-1 win over Bloemfontein Celtic to move three points above the relegation zone.

Siphelele Luthuli opened the scoring for Celtic before Bonginkosi Ntuli drew his side level. That goal opened up the path for Butholezwe Ncube to score the winner after coming up on as a sub.
