Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was disappointed with their performance in the 2-0 defeat to Southampton in the EFL Cup quarter-final on Wednesday.

The Saints secured their spot in the semi-finals – for the first time in 30 years – through goals by Jordy Clasie and Ryan Bertrand.

The 67-year-old said his side’s performance on the night was not good enough to earn them a semi-final spot.

‘It’s not only a disappointing night because we are out, but it’s a disappointing night because the performance was disappointing. I question our urgency level, our focus from the start on. It was not good enough and we paid for that,’ Wenger told the Arsenal website.

‘Overall, I think that is the most disappointing. It can happen that you go out of the competition, but our first 45 minutes were just not good enough and not at the level of required concentration.

‘In the second half we responded well, but overall for me, that’s the most disappointing.’

Arsenal will be hoping to bounce back when they face West Ham United in the Premier League at the London Stadium on Saturday.

Kick-off has been set for 19:30.
